Blu-ray seems to have won the game.
The news of technology these days is the definitive abandonment of Toshiba HD DVD format in favor of Sony's Blu-ray, it definitely wins the battle for the newly formed plastic disks.
Many people think that a breakthrough is now available up to 50GB of disk capacity, and probably some personal and professional environments makes sense.
In my case for over a year or not I record a CD or a DVD and I have no perspective on anything recorded in any magnetic plastic in the next 25 years 
Supports "mobile" recording, I have around here, and I use are:
- External hard disk (with a total capacity of 1'5TB)
- iPod nano (4GB)
- Creative Zen Micro (6GB)
- "Xupete" (also called "MemoryStick) (total 4x1GB)
- SD and microSD cards
- MacBook (120GB that can go everywhere)

Ludo with you that I entirely agree. Tons of CDs should be stored and be renewed before it did ... but now I do not either. Only I keep copies of master files and closed projects, neat folders on disk ... if ever your hard drive crashes. But as you say yourself steps CDs on iTunes, just like I do. But also what I do is not go to the iTunes videos to DVD, I have to look .... but death is not evil! x'D
